Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Measure 1 cup of white rice and place it in a fine-mesh strainer. Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear, which helps remove excess starch.

  2. 2

    Combine Ingredients

In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed rice, 2 cups of water, and 0.5 tsp of salt.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Bring to a Boil

Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, stir briefly to ensure the rice is not sticking to the bottom.

  2. 4

    Simmer

Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, and let it simmer for 18-20 minutes. Avoid lifting the lid during cooking to retain steam.

  3. 5

    Check for Doneness

After 18 minutes, check the rice. If all the water has been absorbed and the rice is tender, it is done. If not, cover and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.

  4. 6

    Fluff the Rice

Remove the saucepan from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes. After resting, remove the lid and use a fork to fluff the rice gently.

Serving

  1. 7

    Add Optional Ingredients

If desired, stir in 1 tablespoon of butter or oil, and sprinkle fresh herbs to taste for added flavor.

  2. 8

    Serve

Transfer the steamed rice to a serving bowl and enjoy as a side or base for your favorite dishes.
