Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the brown rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water for about 1-2 minutes. This removes excess starch and helps prevent the rice from becoming gummy.

  2. 2

    Measure Water

In a medium saucepan, measure out 2 cups of water. If you prefer a slightly softer rice, you can add a bit more water (up to 2.5 cups).

  3. 3

    Add Salt

Add 0.5 teaspoon of salt to the water in the saucepan to enhance the flavor of the rice.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Combine Ingredients

Add the rinsed brown rice to the saucepan with the salted water. If using, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil or butter for extra flavor.

  2. 5

    Bring to Boil

Turn the heat to high and bring the mixture to a rolling boil.

  3. 6

    Simmer

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a lid, and let it simmer for about 45-50 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water has been absorbed.

  4. 7

    Fluff and Add Herbs

After cooking, remove the saucepan from heat and let it sit covered for 10 minutes. Then, use a fork to fluff the rice. If desired, stir in 2 tablespoons of fresh herbs for added flavor.
