Pie Crust

Method

Pie Crust Preparation

  1. 1

    Making the Dough

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Cut in the unsalted butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  2. 2

    Adding Water

Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing with a fork until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overwork the dough.

  3. 3

    Chilling the Dough

Divide the dough in half, shape each half into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Filling Preparation

  1. 4

    Preparing Apples

In a large bowl, combine sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, lemon juice, all-purpose flour, and vanilla extract. Toss until apples are well coated.

Assembling and Baking

  1. 5

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

  2. 6

    Rolling Out the Dough

On a floured surface, roll out one disc of dough into a circle to fit a 9-inch pie pan. Place it in the pan and trim the edges.

  3. 7

    Filling the Pie

Fill the crust with the apple mixture, spreading it evenly.

  4. 8

    Top Crust

Roll out the second disc of dough and place it over the apple filling. Trim and crimp the edges to seal. Cut slits in the top crust for steam to escape.

  5. 9

    Brushing and Sprinkling

Brush the top crust with milk and sprinkle granulated sugar over the top.

  6. 10

    Baking the Pie

Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. If the edges brown too quickly, cover them with foil.

  7. 11

    Cooling

Remove from the oven and let the pie cool for at least 2 hours before slicing. Serve warm with ice cream.
