Method
Cocktail
Chill glass
Place a martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it.
Brew espresso
Brew a fresh shot (about 1 oz) of espresso. Allow it to rest for 15–30 seconds so it's hot but not steaming — this helps create a better crema when shaken.
Combine ingredients
Add vodka (2 oz), coffee liqueur (1 oz), freshly brewed espresso (1 oz), and simple syrup (0.5 oz) into a cocktail shaker.
Add ice and shake hard
Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup). Seal and shake vigorously for 12–20 seconds. Shake hard to both chill and aerate the mixture; this helps produce a velvety foam (crema) on top of the cocktail.
Double strain and pour
Remove the chilled glass from the freezer or dump out the ice water. Using a Hawthorne strainer and then a fine mesh strainer (or a single fine strainer), pour the cocktail into the glass to remove ice shards and ensure a silky texture.
Garnish and serve
Garnish with three coffee beans placed on the foam. Serve immediately while the crema is still fresh.
Optional adjustments
For a sweeter or less boozy cocktail, increase simple syrup to 0.75–1 oz or reduce vodka to 1.5 oz and increase coffee liqueur to 1.5 oz.
If you don't have espresso, use very strong cold-brew concentrate (1 oz) but note the crema will be less pronounced; reduce or omit ice in the shaker slightly to compensate for dilution.
