Method
Garnish (optional)
If using chocolate shavings, prepare them by grating a small piece of semi-sweet chocolate with a microplane or knife. If using cocoa powder, have a small sieve ready for dusting.
Cocktail
Fill a cocktail shaker with the ice cubes.
Add the vodka (2 oz), chocolate liqueur (1 oz), heavy cream or half-and-half (1 oz), and simple syrup or chocolate syrup (0.5 oz) to the shaker.
Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 12–20 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes very cold and the mixture is well chilled and slightly frothy.
Remove the chilled martini glass from the freezer. Strain the cocktail through a fine strainer or the shaker's built-in strainer into the prepared glass to remove any small ice chips.
Garnish: sprinkle chocolate shavings over the surface or dust lightly with cocoa powder. If you drizzled syrup inside the glass beforehand, the drizzle will create an attractive presentation.
Serve immediately. Optionally serve with a small biscotti or chocolate truffle on the side.
