Fried Green Tomatoes
Horseradish Sauce
Method
Fried Green Tomatoes
- 1
Prepare the Tomatoes
Wash and slice the green tomatoes into 1/4 inch thick slices. Sprinkle both sides with salt and let them sit for about 10 minutes to draw out moisture.
- 2
Set Up Breading Station
In a shallow dish, set up the breading station by placing the flour in one dish, the buttermilk in another, and the cornmeal mixed with black pepper, cayenne pepper, and additional salt in a third dish.
- 3
Bread the Tomatoes
Dredge each tomato slice in flour, shaking off the excess, then dip into the buttermilk, and finally coat with the cornmeal mixture. Set aside on a plate.
- 4
Fry the Tomatoes
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully add the breaded tomato slices in batches. Fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
Horseradish Sauce
- 5
Mix the Sauce
In a small bowl, combine the prepared horseradish, mayonnaise, and lemon juice. Mix well until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
