Calamari

Marinara Sauce

Method

Fried Calamari

  1. 1

    Prepare the Calamari

Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Mix well.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Wet Mixture

In another bowl, whisk together the egg and buttermilk until well combined.

  4. 4

    Coat the Calamari

Dip each calamari ring into the wet mixture, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge it in the flour mixture. Shake off any excess flour.

  5. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  6. 6

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully add the coated calamari rings in batches to the hot oil. Fry for about 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Marinara Sauce

  1. 7

    Sauté the Garlic

In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.

  2. 8

    Add the Tomatoes

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, stirring to combine with the garlic.

  3. 9

    Season the Sauce

Add the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar to the sauce. Stir well and let it simmer for about 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

  4. 10

    Serve

Once the sauce has thickened, remove from heat. Serve the fried calamari hot with the marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
