Method

Crust Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Dough

In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  2. 2

    Add Ice Water

Stir in the ice water, a tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. Do not overmix.

  3. 3

    Chill the Dough

Shape the dough into a disc, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

  4. 4

    Roll Out the Dough

Once chilled, on a floured surface, roll out the dough to fit a 9-inch pie pan. Transfer the rolled dough to the pan and trim any excess.

  5. 5

    Pre-Bake the Crust

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Prick the bottom of the crust with a fork and bake for 10-15 minutes until lightly golden. Remove from oven and let cool.

Filling Preparation

  1. 6

    Mix the Filling

In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, and buttermilk until well combined.

  2. 7

    Add Flavorings

Stir in the vanilla extract, flour, nutmeg, and salt until everything is well incorporated.

  3. 8

    Pour Filling into Crust

Pour the filling mixture into the pre-baked pie crust, spreading evenly.

Baking

  1. 9

    Bake the Pie

Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden.

  2. 10

    Cool the Pie

Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool at room temperature for at least 2 hours before serving.

  3. 11

    Serve

Slice the pie and serve it plain or with whipped cream, if desired.
