Method
For the Calamari
- 1
Prepare the Squid
Clean and slice the squid into rings, ensuring they are uniform in size for even cooking.
- 2
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Mix thoroughly.
- 3
Coat the Squid
Dip each squid ring into the beaten egg, letting the excess drip off, then dredge it in the flour mixture to coat evenly.
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a deep pan or fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).
- 5
Fry the Squid
Carefully add the coated squid rings to the hot oil in batches, frying for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- 6
Serve
Arrange the fried calamari on a serving plate. Optionally, sprinkle with additional salt.
For the Spicy Marinara Sauce
- 7
Sauté Garlic
In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and crushed red pepper flakes, sautéing until fragrant (about 1 minute).
- 8
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.
- 9
Simmer the Sauce
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally until thickened.
- 10
Garnish and Serve
Stir in the chopped fresh basil just before serving, and serve warm alongside the fried calamari.
