Pita Bread Ingredients

Method

Instructions

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Ingredients

In a large bowl, mix together the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil.

  3. 3

    Knead Dough

Stir until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    First Rise

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  5. 5

    Shape Pitas

Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten into circles about 6 inches in diameter.

  6. 6

    Second Rise

Cover the shaped pitas with a cloth and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

  7. 7

    Bake Pitas

Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a baking stone or an inverted baking sheet inside to heat. Bake the pitas for about 3-5 minutes until they puff up.

  8. 8

    Cool and Serve

Remove from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack. Serve warm.
