Instructions
- 1
Prepare the Okra
Wash the okra pods under cold water and pat them dry with a paper towel. Trim the ends and slice them into 1/2 inch pieces.
- 2
Make the Batter
In a bowl, combine the cornmeal, all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. In another bowl, whisk together the egg and buttermilk until well combined.
- 3
Coat the Okra
Dip the sliced okra into the buttermilk mixture, allowing any excess to drip off. Then, coat the okra pieces in the cornmeal mixture, ensuring they are evenly covered.
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of the batter into the oil; it should sizzle immediately.
- 5
Fry the Okra
Carefully add the coated okra to the hot oil in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry until golden brown and crisp, about 3-4 minutes per batch. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- 6
Serve
Serve the crispy okra pods hot as an appetizer. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce!
