Baklava Ingredients

Method

Baklava Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Nut Filling

In a food processor, combine walnuts, sugar, and cinnamon. Pulse until finely chopped. Set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Phyllo Dough

Thaw phyllo dough according to package instructions. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  3. 3

    Layer the Phyllo

Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Place one sheet of phyllo in the dish and brush with butter. Repeat this process, layering about 8 sheets, making sure to brush each sheet with butter.

  4. 4

    Add the Filling

Spread a thin layer of the walnut mixture over the phyllo sheets. Repeat the layering process (5-6 sheets of phyllo followed by the nut mixture) until all ingredients are used, finishing with a top layer of phyllo sheets (about 8 sheets).

  5. 5

    Cut and Bake

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.

  6. 6

    Prepare the Syrup

While the baklava is baking, combine water, sugar, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes.

  7. 7

    Pour Syrup Over Baklava

Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the syrup over it. Allow it to soak for several hours or overnight before serving.
