Method

Preparing Sushi Rice

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

In a fine mesh strainer, rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.

  2. 2

    Cook the Rice

In a rice cooker or pot, combine the rinsed rice and water (1.8 cups). Cook according to rice cooker instructions or bring to a boil, then reduce to low heat, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes.

  3. 3

    Season the Rice

In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture. Let it cool to room temperature.

Preparing the Filling

  1. 4

    Slice the Vegetables

Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and slice into thin strips. Cut the cucumber into thin julienne strips.

  2. 5

    Prepare the Crab Sticks

If using imitation crab sticks, gently shred them into smaller pieces or leave them whole based on preference.

Assembling the Roll

  1. 6

    Prepare the Nori

Place a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface and lay a nori sheet shiny side down on the mat.

  2. 7

    Spread the Rice

Wet your hands to prevent sticking, take about 3/4 cup of sushi rice, and evenly spread it over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top.

  3. 8

    Add the Filling

In the center of the rice, layer the avocado, cucumber, and crab sticks.

  4. 9

    Roll It Up

Using the bamboo mat, carefully lift the edge of the mat closest to you and start rolling the sushi away from you, tucking the filling inside. Roll tightly while pulling the mat away.

  5. 10

    Seal the Roll

Dampen the top border of the nori with water to seal the roll. Use the mat to shape the roll by pressing gently.

Topping and Serving

  1. 11

    Slice the Roll

Using a sharp, wet knife, cut the roll into 6-8 equal slices.

  2. 12

    Add the Toppings

Layer the slices with salmon, ahi tuna, and hamachi. Finish with a sprinkle of black salt on top.

  3. 13

    Serve

Arrange the sushi rolls on a plate and serve with soy sauce and wasabi on the side.
