Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Potatoes
Start by peeling the russet potatoes. Then, grate them using a box grater or a food processor until you have about 4 cups of shredded potatoes.
- 2
Rinse and Drain
Place the grated potatoes in a bowl of cold water, swish them around to remove excess starch, and then drain. Rinse under cold water and drain again. Pat the potatoes dry with a clean kitchen towel.
- 3
Chop the Onion
Finely chop the medium onion and set it aside.
Cooking
- 4
Heat the Pan
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil and butter over medium heat until hot but not smoking.
- 5
Mix Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the shredded potatoes, chopped onion, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
- 6
Cook the Hash Browns
Add the potato mixture to the heated skillet, spreading it out evenly. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and crispy.
- 7
Flip and Finish Cooking
Using a spatula, flip the hash browns in sections. Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes on the other side until golden brown and crispy.
- 8
Serve
Once cooked, remove the hash browns from the skillet and let them drain on paper towels. Serve immediately as a delicious breakfast side.
