Preparation Steps

  1. 1

    Make the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well. Add the lard or vegetable shortening and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.

  2. 2

    Rest the Dough

Cover the dough with a clean cloth or plastic wrap and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.

  3. 3

    Roll and Cut

After resting, divide the dough into smaller portions. Roll each portion out to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into 2-inch squares or triangles.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking.

  5. 5

    Fry the Sopaipillas

Carefully place the cut dough pieces into the hot oil, frying a few at a time. Fry until they puff up and turn golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve warm, optionally with honey or your favorite dipping sauce.
