Make the Vanilla Ice Cream Base
In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk, heavy cream, and granulated sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Let cool.

Prepare the Chocolate Ice Cream Base
In a separate bowl, whisk together cocoa powder and a pinch of salt. Add 1 cup of the vanilla mixture to the cocoa mixture and whisk until smooth. Then fold in the remaining vanilla mixture until well combined.

Prepare the Ice Cream Maker
Chill your ice cream maker according to manufacturer instructions.

Churn the Ice Cream
Pour the vanilla mixture into the ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions until it reaches a soft-serve consistency. Transfer to a container and freeze until firm, about 4 hours.

Repeat the churning process with the chocolate mixture, and transfer to another container. Freeze until firm, about 4 hours.
