- 1
Build and stir
Place a mixing glass or pint glass on your work surface. Add 2 oz rye whiskey, 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz simple or demerara syrup, and 3 dashes Angostura bitters into the mixing glass.
- 2
Add ice and chill
Fill the mixing glass with large, fresh ice cubes (enough to come well above the liquid line). Stir gently but steadily for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 strokes) until the mix is well chilled and slightly diluted — the glass should become frosty on the outside and the liquid should look slightly viscous.
- 3
Prepare the serving glass
Place one large ice cube (or a few fresh large cubes) into a chilled old fashioned glass. If you prefer, you can chill the glass in the freezer beforehand.
- 4
Strain
Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer (or the mixing glass lid), strain the stirred cocktail into the old fashioned glass over the prepared ice.
- 5
Garnish and finish
Express the oils from one orange peel over the surface of the drink by holding the peel skin-side down and giving it a sharp bend to release the oils. Rub the peel around the glass rim and drop it into the drink. If desired, add one Luxardo or brandied cherry on a cocktail pick. Serve immediately.
