Method
Muddle & Mix
- 1
Prepare glass
Place 6 fresh blackberries and 10 fresh mint leaves into a sturdy mixing glass or the bottom of a double-old-fashioned glass.
- 2
Muddle
Using a cocktail muddler, gently press and twist the blackberries and mint 8–10 times until the berries are broken down and the mint releases its aroma. Avoid pulverizing the mint to prevent bitterness.
- 3
Add citrus and sweetener
Pour in 1 oz fresh lime juice and 0.75 oz simple syrup. Give the mixture a quick stir to combine and dissolve syrup into the muddled fruit and mint.
- 4
Add rum and ice
Add 2 oz Don Q Cristal rum and fill the glass with crushed ice (about 1 cup). Stir briskly for about 10–15 seconds to chill and slightly dilute the mixture, incorporating the muddled fruit throughout.
Finish & Garnish
- 5
Top with soda
Top the drink with approximately 3 oz soda water, gently fold once or twice with a bar spoon to lift the fruit and mint through the drink without over-mixing.
