Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, salt, and instant yeast until well combined.

  2. 2

    Add Butter

Cut the unsalted butter into small pieces and add it to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. 3

    Heat Milk

In a small saucepan, heat the milk until warm (not boiling). Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

  4. 4

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In a small bowl, whisk together the warm milk and egg yolk until well combined.

  5. 5

    Form Dough

Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture and stir until a dough begins to form. Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface until smooth, about 5 minutes.

  6. 6

    Chill Dough

Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Cheese Filling Preparation

  1. 7

    Mix Cheese Filling

In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, and mix until combined. Add the egg and mix until the filling is smooth and creamy.

Assembly and Baking

  1. 8

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. 9

    Roll Out Dough

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.

  3. 10

    Cut and Shape

Cut the dough into squares, approximately 4x4 inches. Place a tablespoon of cheese filling in the center of each square. Fold the corners of the squares over the filling to create a pocket and pinch to seal.

  4. 11

    Apply Egg Wash

Brush the tops of the filled danishes with the egg wash to give them a golden color when baked.

  5. 12

    Bake

Place the assembled danishes on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

  6. 13

    Cool and Dust

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
