Toppings for Variety
Method
Preparing the Dough
- 1
Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- 2
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Mix well.
- 3
Combine Ingredients
Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour in the yeast mixture and vegetable oil. Stir until a dough begins to form.
- 4
Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 5
Let it Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Shaping and Boiling
- 6
Shape the Bagels
Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then poke a hole in the center with your finger, stretching to form a bagel shape.
- 7
Prepare for Boiling
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- 8
Boil the Bagels
Carefully drop a few bagels into the boiling water at a time. Boil for about 1-2 minutes on each side.
- 9
Drain and Top
Remove the bagels with a slotted spoon and let them drain on a towel. If desired, add toppings like cinnamon sugar, everything bagel seasoning, asiago cheese, or sesame seeds before baking.
Baking
- 10
Bake the Bagels
Place the bagels on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- 11
Cool and Serve
Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.
