Steak

Method

Preparing the Steak

  1. 1

    Tenderizing the Steak

Begin by tenderizing the beef steak using a meat mallet. Pound the steak to about 1/2 inch thickness to ensure it cooks evenly and absorbs the flavors.

  2. 2

    Seasoning the Steak

Sprinkle both sides of the tenderized steak with salt and black pepper. Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes to absorb the seasoning.

  3. 3

    Breading the Steak

Set up a breading station with three bowls: one with all-purpose flour, the second with beaten eggs, and the third with breadcrumbs. Dredge the steak in flour, shaking off the excess, then dip it into the egg mixture, and finally coat it with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.

Frying the Steak

  1. 4

    Heating the Oil

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it shimmers.

  2. 5

    Cooking the Steak

Carefully place the breaded steak in the hot oil. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

Making the Red Gravy

  1. 6

    Sautéing the Aromatics

In a separate saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.

  2. 7

    Adding the Tomatoes

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, followed by oregano, basil, sugar, salt, and black pepper. If using, add the red wine for added depth of flavor.

  3. 8

    Simmering the Sauce

Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook uncovered for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally until it thickens slightly.

Serving the Dish

  1. 9

    Plating the Steak

Place the fried breaded steak on a serving plate and generously ladle the red gravy over the top.

  2. 10

    Garnishing

Optionally, garnish with chopped fresh parsley or grated Parmesan cheese before serving.
