Italian Sausage
Red Gravy
Method
Italian Sausage
- 1
Sauté the Sausages
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the Italian sausage links and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove the sausages from the skillet and set aside.
- 2
Cook Vegetables
In the same skillet, add the minced garlic, sliced red bell pepper, and onion. Sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are soft and the onion is translucent.
- 3
Season the Mixture
Sprinkle the crushed red pepper flakes and black pepper over the sautéed vegetables. Stir well to combine and cook for an additional minute.
- 4
Add Sausages Back
Return the browned sausages to the skillet with the vegetables. Stir to combine and set aside while you prepare the red gravy.
Red Gravy
- 5
Combine Ingredients
In a medium saucepan, combine the canned crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, sugar, salt, and bay leaf. Stir to combine.
- 6
Simmer the Gravy
Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 7
Combine with Sausages
After the gravy has simmered, add the sausage and vegetable mixture to the gravy. Stir well to combine and let it simmer for an additional 10 minutes to meld the flavors.
