Burger Patties Preparation

Mix and Form Patties
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty, about 1 inch thick.

Chill the Patties
Place the formed patties on a plate and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up before cooking.
Cooking the Burgers

Preheat the Broiler
Preheat your broiler on high for about 10 minutes.

Broil the Patties
Place the chilled patties on a broiler pan. Broil for about 4-5 minutes on one side, then flip and broil for an additional 3-4 minutes on the other side, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).

Add Cheese
In the last minute of broiling, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty and close the broiler door to melt the cheese.
Assembling the Burgers

Prepare the Buns
While the burgers are broiling, lightly toast the burger buns under the broiler for about 1-2 minutes until golden brown.
