Method

Cooking Spaghetti

  1. 1

    Boil the Water

Fill a large pot with water and add a generous amount of salt. Bring it to a rolling boil over high heat.

  2. 2

    Cook the Spaghetti

Add the spaghetti to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions, usually about 8-10 minutes, until al dente. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  3. 3

    Drain the Spaghetti

Once cooked, reserve about 1/2 cup of pasta water, then drain the spaghetti in a colander.

Making Marinara Sauce

  1. 4

    Heat the Olive Oil

In a large saucepan over medium heat, add the olive oil and allow it to heat for about a minute.

  2. 5

    Sauté Garlic

Add the minced garlic to the hot oil and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute. Be careful not to burn the garlic.

  3. 6

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, and add dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Stir to combine.

  4. 7

    Simmer the Sauce

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally until it thickens.

  5. 8

    Finish with Fresh Basil

Remove the sauce from heat and stir in the chopped fresh basil. Adjust seasoning with more salt and pepper if needed.

Combining and Serving

  1. 9

    Combine Spaghetti and Sauce

Add the drained spaghetti to the marinara sauce and toss to coat evenly. If the sauce is too thick, add a little reserved pasta water to reach desired consistency.

  2. 10

    Serve

Plate the spaghetti and sauce while hot. Serve with a choice of house salad, caesar salad, or a bowl of soup.
