Optional Toppings

Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring about 4 quarts of water to a boil. Add the 1 tablespoon of salt to the boiling water.

  2. 2

    Cook Spaghetti

Add the spaghetti to the boiling water. Cook according to package instructions, usually about 8-10 minutes, until al dente. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  3. 3

    Drain and Set Aside

Once cooked, drain the spaghetti in a colander and set aside.

Making the Marinara Sauce

  1. 4

    Heat Olive Oil

In a large skillet over medium heat, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Allow it to heat for about 1-2 minutes.

  2. 5

    Sauté Garlic

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for about 1 minute, until fragrant but not browned.

  3. 6

    Add Tomatoes

Pour in the 28 ounces of canned whole tomatoes, breaking them up with a spoon as you add them.

  4. 7

    Season the Sauce

Stir in the dried oregano, dried basil, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer.

  5. 8

    Simmer the Sauce

Let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.

  6. 9

    Garnish

Stir in the chopped fresh basil just before serving, reserving some for garnish.

Combining and Serving

  1. 10

    Combine Spaghetti and Sauce

Add the drained spaghetti to the skillet with the marinara sauce. Toss to coat the spaghetti evenly with the sauce.

  2. 11

    Serve

Serve the spaghetti hot, garnished with additional fresh basil and optional grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
