Cooking the Pasta

Boil Water
In a large pot, bring about 4 quarts of water to a boil. Add the 1 tablespoon of salt to the boiling water.

Cook Spaghetti
Add the spaghetti to the boiling water. Cook according to package instructions, usually about 8-10 minutes, until al dente. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Drain and Set Aside
Once cooked, drain the spaghetti in a colander and set aside.
Making the Marinara Sauce

Heat Olive Oil
In a large skillet over medium heat, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Allow it to heat for about 1-2 minutes.

Add Tomatoes
Pour in the 28 ounces of canned whole tomatoes, breaking them up with a spoon as you add them.

Season the Sauce
Stir in the dried oregano, dried basil, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer.

Simmer the Sauce
Let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.

Stir in the chopped fresh basil just before serving, reserving some for garnish.

Combine Spaghetti and Sauce
Add the drained spaghetti to the skillet with the marinara sauce. Toss to coat the spaghetti evenly with the sauce.
