Method

For the Calamari

  1. 1

    Prepare the Calamari

Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels.

  2. 2

    Make the Breading

In a bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Wet Mixture

In another bowl, whisk together the egg and milk until well combined.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

    Coat the Calamari

Dip each calamari ring first into the wet mixture, allowing excess to drip off, then coat with the flour mixture. Shake off excess flour.

  6. 6

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully place the coated calamari rings into the hot oil, frying in batches. Cook for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

  7. 7

    Drain

Remove the fried calamari with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain any excess oil.

For the Marinara Sauce

  1. 8

    Heat the Olive Oil

In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

  2. 9

    Sauté the Garlic

Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute, until fragrant but not browned.

  3. 10

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Pour in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.

  4. 11

    Simmer the Sauce

Reduce the heat and let the sauce simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  5. 12

    Add Fresh Basil

Stir in the chopped fresh basil just before serving.
