Sauce Base

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Heat the Oil

In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat until shimmering.

  2. 2

    Sauté the Onion

Add the finely chopped onion to the pan and sauté until translucent, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 3

    Add the Garlic

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  4. 4

    Add the Tomatoes

Pour in the canned whole tomatoes (including their juices). Use a wooden spoon to break them up into smaller pieces.

Simmering

  1. 5

    Season the Sauce

Add dried oregano, dried basil, sugar, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes to the sauce. Stir well to combine.

  2. 6

    Simmer

Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and cover the pan. Let it cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Finishing Touches

  1. 7

    Add Fresh Basil

Just before serving, stir in the chopped fresh basil.

  2. 8

    Serve

Remove from heat and serve your marinara sauce warm with pasta, on pizza, or as a dipping sauce.
