Instructions

  1. 1

    Caramelize the Onions

In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. Set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Patties

In a bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Form into two equal patties.

  3. 3

    Cook the Patties

In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter. Increase the heat to medium-high and cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss and a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty to melt.

  4. 4

    Assemble the Patty Melt

Spread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. On the non-buttered side of two slices, place a patty with melted cheese, top with caramelized onions, and then add the other slice of rye, buttered side up.

  5. 5

    Grill the Sandwich

Wipe the skillet clean if necessary and heat over medium heat. Grill the sandwiches for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy.

  6. 6

    Serve

Remove from heat, cut in half, and serve warm.
