Shrimp Preparation
- 1
Season the Shrimp
In a large bowl, combine the peeled and deveined shrimp with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and lemon juice. Toss well to coat the shrimp evenly. Let the shrimp marinate for about 15-20 minutes.
Breading Mixture
- 2
Prepare the Breading
In three separate shallow dishes, set up the breading station. In the first dish, place the all-purpose flour. In the second dish, whisk together the eggs and buttermilk. In the third dish, combine the panko breadcrumbs, cornstarch, paprika, and cayenne pepper. Mix well to ensure an even distribution of spices.
Frying
- 3
Heat the Oil
In a large, deep skillet or frying pan, pour in the vegetable oil and heat over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small piece of bread into it; if it sizzles and turns golden, it’s ready.

Bread the Shrimp
Take each marinated shrimp and first dredge it in the flour, shaking off any excess. Then dip it into the egg and buttermilk mixture, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, coat the shrimp with the panko breadcrumb mixture, pressing lightly to ensure it adheres well.
- 5
Fry the Shrimp
Working in batches, carefully place the breaded shrimp into the hot oil. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the shrimp from the oil and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- 6
Serve
Serve the fried shrimp hot with your choice of dipping sauce, such as cocktail sauce or tartar sauce.
