Method
Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Okra
Rinse the fresh okra under cold water and pat them dry with a paper towel. Trim the ends and cut the okra into 1/2-inch slices.
Coating
- 2
Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Mix well until evenly combined.
- 3
Coat the Okra
Pour the buttermilk into another bowl. Dip the sliced okra into the buttermilk, ensuring they are fully coated, then transfer them to the bowl with the cornmeal mixture. Toss the okra until they are well coated with the dry mixture.
Frying
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large skillet or deep frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can check the temperature by dropping a small amount of cornmeal into the oil; if it sizzles, the oil is ready.
- 5
Fry the Okra
Carefully add the coated okra to the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally for even cooking.
- 6
Drain and Serve
Remove the fried okra from the oil using a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to absorb excess oil. Serve immediately while hot.
