Method
Cooking the Pasta

Boil Water
In a large pot, bring 4 quarts of water to a rolling boil. Add 1 tablespoon of salt.

Cook Fettuccine
Add the fettuccine pasta to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes.

Drain Pasta
Once cooked, drain the pasta and set aside, reserving a small amount of pasta water.
Making the Alfredo Sauce

Melt Butter
In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 cup of butter.

Stir in Heavy Cream
Slowly pour in 1 cup of heavy cream, stirring constantly, and bring to a gentle simmer.

Add Cheese and Seasonings
Stir in 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper. Keep stirring until the cheese is melted and the sauce is creamy.
Combining Pasta and Sauce

Combine Pasta with Sauce
Add the drained fettuccine to the Alfredo sauce, tossing to coat the pasta evenly. If the sauce is too thick, add a little reserved pasta water to reach the desired consistency.

Add Protein (Optional)
If using, add the sliced cooked chicken or cooked shrimp to the pasta and toss gently until combined.
Serving the Dish

Plate the Fettuccine
Serve the fettuccine Alfredo in bowls or on plates.

Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and extra Parmesan cheese, if desired. Serve immediately.
