Method

Onion Rings Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Peel the Texas colossal onions and slice them into 1/2 inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set aside.

  2. 2

    Make the Breading Mixture

In a large bowl, combine all-purpose flour, cornmeal, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Buttermilk Mixture

In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg until well combined.

  4. 4

    Bread the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring first into the buttermilk mixture, then into the breading mixture. Make sure each ring is fully coated.

  5. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep pot or fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).

  6. 6

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully add the breaded onion rings to the hot oil in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pot. Fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per batch.

  7. 7

    Drain the Rings

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried onion rings from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.

Creamy Ranch Dressing Preparation

  1. 8

    Combine Ingredients

In a mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise, sour cream, buttermilk, dried dill, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.

  2. 9

    Mix Well

Whisk the ingredients together until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.

  3. 10

    Chill the Dressing

Cover the ranch dressing and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
