Onion Rings

Creamy Jalapeño Ranch Dipping Sauce

Method

Onion Rings Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Peel the Texas colossal onions and slice them into approximately 1/2 inch thick rings. Carefully separate the rings and set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Batter

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Mix well until fully incorporated.

  3. 3

    Add Buttermilk

Pour the buttermilk into the dry ingredients and stir until a smooth batter forms. If the batter is too thick, add a little more buttermilk until desired consistency is reached.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep fryer or a large heavy pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Allow excess batter to drip off before frying.

  6. 6

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Creamy Jalapeño Ranch Sauce Preparation

  1. 7

    Make the Dipping Sauce

In a food processor, combine the ranch dressing, jalapeños (remove seeds for less heat), lime juice, and fresh cilantro. Blend until smooth and well combined.

  2. 8

    Taste and Adjust

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if necessary. You may add more lime juice for acidity or more jalapeños for heat.

Serving

  1. 9

    Serve the Onion Rings

Arrange the fried onion rings on a serving platter and serve hot with the creamy jalapeño ranch dipping sauce on the side.
