Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel the onions and slice them into approximately 1/4-inch thick rings. Carefully separate the rings from each other and set them aside.

Batter Preparation

  1. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Whisk together until well combined.

  2. 3

    Add Cold Water

Gradually add the cold water to the dry mixture, whisking until the batter is smooth and free of lumps. The batter should be thick enough to coat the onion rings.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep fryer or large heavy pot, add the vegetable oil and heat it to 350°F (175°C). You can check the temperature using a thermometer.

  2. 5

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing excess batter to drip off. Make sure the onion rings are well coated.

  3. 6

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry them in batches for about 2-4 minutes or until they are golden brown and crispy.

  4. 7

    Drain and Serve

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried onion rings and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
