Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel the large onions and slice them into 1/4 inch thick rings. Carefully separate the rings from each other and set them aside.

Batter Preparation

  1. 2

    Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Whisk together until well combined.

  2. 3

    Add Sparkling Water

Slowly pour the cold sparkling water into the dry mixture while whisking continuously until the batter is smooth and well-blended. The batter should be thick enough to coat the onion rings.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep frying pan or pot, pour the vegetable oil and heat it over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can use a thermometer to check the temperature.

  2. 5

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing the excess to drip off before gently placing them in the hot oil.

  3. 6

    Fry the Onion Rings

Fry the onion rings in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.

  4. 7

    Drain and Cool

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried onion rings from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil. Allow them to cool slightly before serving.
