Cook the Penne
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Brown the Sausage
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Remove the sausage from its casing and add it to the skillet, breaking it up with a spatula. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.

Create the Sauce
Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, salt, black pepper, and half of the chopped basil. Let the sauce simmer for about 10 minutes.

Toast the Fennel Seeds
In a small dry pan, toast the fennel seeds over medium heat for 2-3 minutes until fragrant. Set aside.

Combine and Serve
Add the cooked penne to the skillet with the sauce and toss to combine. Serve hot, garnished with the remaining basil and toasted fennel seeds.
