Method

Batter Preparation

1

Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, ground black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Whisk together until well combined.

2

Add Cold Water

Gradually add the cold water to the dry ingredients while whisking continuously until the batter is smooth and free of lumps. Set aside for about 10 minutes.

Onion Rings Preparation

3

Slice the Onions

Peel the large onions and slice them into 1/4-inch thick rings. Carefully separate the rings from one another and set them aside.

4

Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, pour in the vegetable oil and heat it over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can check the temperature with a kitchen thermometer or drop a small amount of batter into the oil; if it sizzles immediately, it's ready.

5

Coat the Onion Rings

Take an onion ring, dip it into the batter, ensuring it's completely coated, and then allow the excess batter to drip off.

6

Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place the coated onion ring into the hot oil. Fry a few at a time, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crisp.

7

Drain and Serve

Once golden brown, remove the onion rings from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Season with additional salt if desired. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
