Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Build and Stir

Add gin, Carpano Antica vermouth, and Campari (each 1 oz) into a mixing glass or other mixing vessel. Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice (enough to chill well and slightly dilute — about 1 cup of ice or several large cubes). Using a bar spoon, stir gently but thoroughly for 20–30 seconds until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted (you should feel the glass frost on the outside).

  2. 2

    Strain

Place a large ice cube (or fresh large cubes) into a chilled Old Fashioned (rocks) glass. Double-strain or use a julep strainer to pour the stirred Negroni over the ice, leaving small shards behind in the mixing glass.

  3. 3

    Garnish and Finish

Express the oils of one orange peel over the surface of the cocktail by holding the peel skin-side down about 2–3 inches above the drink and giving it a quick firm squeeze. Rub the peel along the rim of the glass if desired, then drop the peel into the drink as garnish.

  4. 4

Serve immediately. Enjoy as a classic aperitivo.
