Method
Preparation & Build
- 1
Measure and combine
Add 2 oz Elijah Craig Small Batch bourbon, 3 dashes Angostura bitters, and 0.25 oz (about 1/2 tablespoon) simple syrup to a mixing glass.
- 2
Add ice
Fill the mixing glass with ice (enough to chill and dilute properly, about 6-8 large cubes).
- 3
Stir
Stir the mixture briskly with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted (target about 15–20% dilution by eye/feel).
- 4
Prepare glass
Place one large ice cube in a lowball / rocks glass. If serving without a large cube, fill the glass with fresh ice.
- 5
Strain
Using a strainer, pour the chilled cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube.
- 6
Express garnish
Take an orange peel and hold it skin-side down over the drink. Give the peel a sharp twist to express the oils across the surface, then rub the peel's rim along the glass and drop it into the drink.
- 7
Serve
Serve immediately. Provide a short stirring straw or spoon if the guest wants to adjust dilution.
Optional Variations
- 8
For a sweeter Old Fashioned, increase simple syrup to 0.5 oz. For a drier, spirit-forward version omit the simple syrup and increase bitters to 4 dashes. To add a smoky note, substitute part of the bourbon with a small splash (0.25 oz) of peaty Scotch.
