Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for several minutes or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass, add 6 large ice cubes, 2 oz Knob Creek 100 Rye, 1 oz Carpano Antica Formula sweet vermouth, and 2 dashes Angostura orange bitters.

  3. 3

    Stir

Stir the mixture with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full turns) until well-chilled and slightly diluted. The drink should become satin-smooth and the mixing glass should develop a slight frost.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

Discard ice or water from the chilled serving glass. If desired, lightly run the expressed orange twist around the rim to add aromatic oils.

  5. 5

    Strain and garnish

Double-strain the mixed Manhattan into the chilled glass using a julep or hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer (optional). Skewer the Luxardo cherry and drop it into the cocktail. Express an orange twist over the drink to release oils, then rub the twist on the rim and either discard or drop it in as garnish.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the balance of spicy rye, rich vermouth, and bright orange bitters.
