Prepare the Calamari
In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.

Coat the Calamari
Dip the calamari rings into the buttermilk, allowing any excess to drip off. Then, dredge them in the flour mixture until well coated.

Heat the Oil
In a large heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

Fry the Calamari
Fry the coated calamari in batches for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Add the canned crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Stir well to combine.

Simmer the Sauce
Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the fresh basil towards the end of cooking.
