Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the long-grain rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming sticky.

  2. 2

    Chop the Aromatics

Finely chop the onion and mince the garlic.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Sauté Aromatics

In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil (or butter) over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until translucent. Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute until fragrant.

  2. 4

    Add Rice and Spices

Add the rinsed rice to the saucepan along with the salt, black pepper, and cumin. Stir well to coat the rice with the oil and spices, cooking for about 2 minutes.

  3. 5

    Add Broth and Simmer

Pour in the chicken broth and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes until the rice is cooked and has absorbed the liquid.

  4. 6

    Fluff and Garnish

Once cooked, remove the saucepan from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes. Then, fluff the rice with a fork and sprinkle with chopped parsley if desired before serving.
