Ingredients for Bao Buns

Method

Directions for Making Bao Buns

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dough

In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

In a separate bowl, mix all-purpose flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture into the flour, along with olive oil, and knead until a smooth dough forms.

  3. 3

Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  4. 4

    Prepare the Mushroom Filling

While the dough is rising, clean and chop the mixed mushrooms into small pieces.

  5. 5

In a skillet, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped mushrooms and sauté for about 5-7 minutes until they release their moisture and begin to brown.

  6. 6

In a small bowl, mix hoisin sauce, honey, and tamari. Pour this mixture over the sautéed mushrooms and stir to combine. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.

  7. 7

    Form the Bao Buns

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten it into a disc about 4 inches in diameter.

  8. 8

Place a spoonful of the mushroom filling in the center of each disc. Gather the edges of the dough and pinch them together to seal the filling inside.

  9. 9

    Steam the Bao Buns

Prepare a steamer pot with water and bring it to a boil. Line the steamer basket with parchment paper to prevent sticking.

  10. 10

Place the filled buns in the steamer, leaving space between each. Cover and steam for about 15 minutes until the buns are puffed and cooked through.

  11. 11

    Serve

Remove the buns from the steamer and drizzle with kewpie mayonnaise before serving. Enjoy warm!
