Preparing the Patty

Mix the Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Form the Patties
Divide the beef mixture into two equal portions and shape them into round patties, about 1 inch thick. Press a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent puffing during cooking.

Add Cheese
In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty and cover with a lid to allow the cheese to melt.
Assembling the Cheeseburger

Prepare the Vegetables
While the patties are cooking, wash and slice the tomato and onion. Separate the lettuce leaves for topping.

Toast the Buns
If desired, lightly toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster.

Assemble the Burger
On the bottom half of each bun, place a lettuce leaf, followed by the cooked patty with melted cheese. Add slices of tomato and onion, then top with the other half of the bun.
