Prepare the Onions
Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings, about 1/2 inch thick. Carefully separate the rings and set them aside.

Make the Batter
In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and black pepper. In another bowl, beat the eggs and mix in the milk. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until smooth.

Bread the Onion Rings
Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing the excess to drip off. Then, coat the ring in the coarse bread crumbs, pressing gently to ensure the crumbs adhere.

In a deep fryer or large pot, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
