Coffee Base

Method

Coffee Base

  1. 1

    Measure beans and water

Weigh 50 g (0.05 kg) of whole coffee beans and measure 600 ml of filtered water. This yields about 4 standard (~150 ml) cups of brewed coffee. Adjust ratio if you prefer stronger or weaker coffee (common ratio: 1:12 to 1:17 coffee:water by weight).

  2. 2

    Heat water

Bring the water to the appropriate temperature. For most brewing methods, heat to 92–96°C (197–205°F). If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a boil and let rest 30 seconds.

  3. 3

    Grind beans

Grind the coffee just before brewing. Use a grind size appropriate to your brewing method: coarse for French press, medium-coarse for pour-over (e.g., V60), medium for drip, fine for espresso. For 50 g beans for pour-over, grind to a medium-fine consistency (similar to table salt).

  4. 4

    Pre-wet filter / preheat equipment

If using a paper filter, rinse it with hot water to remove paper taste and warm the brewer. If using French press, preheat the carafe with hot water and discard water before brewing.

  5. 5

    Brew (pour-over method example)

Place the ground coffee in the filter and set your brewer over a carafe or mug. Start a timer. Bloom: pour about twice the coffee weight in hot water (e.g., 100 g/ml water for 50 g coffee) evenly to saturate grounds and let bloom 30–45 seconds. Continue pouring in slow, steady concentric circles until you reach 600 ml total. Aim for a total brew time of 2.5–4 minutes depending on grind and method. If using French press: add grounds to carafe, pour hot water, stir gently, steep 4 minutes, then press slowly. For drip machine, follow manufacturer instructions and use the measured grounds and water.

  6. 6

    Serve brewed coffee

Once brewing is complete, pour the brewed coffee into cups or a serving carafe immediately to avoid over-extraction or sitting on grounds. Keep brewed coffee warm but avoid prolonged reheating which degrades flavor.

Optional Add-ins

  1. 7

    Sweeten

Taste the coffee and add sweetener if desired. Stir in up to 1 tablespoon granulated sugar per cup, or use 1 teaspoon simple syrup for one cup (dissolves more easily). Adjust to taste.

  2. 8

    Add milk or cream

If you like milk or cream, warm 120 ml of milk (or the desired amount per serving) until steaming but not boiling, then pour into the brewed coffee to taste. For a richer cup, add 30 ml heavy cream instead of milk.

  3. 9

    Flavor finishing

Add a pinch (~1/4 tsp) ground cinnamon or 1/4 tsp vanilla extract to the cup for extra aroma. Stir and taste; adjust amounts sparingly to avoid overpowering the coffee.

Cleanup

  1. 10

Discard used grounds (compost them if possible), rinse and dry the grinder, brewer, and carafe. Store leftover beans in an airtight container away from light and heat.
