Method

Preparation of Seafood

  1. 1

    Clean the Seafood

Rinse the clams and mussels under cold water to remove any sand or debris. Discard any that are open and do not close when tapped. Peel and devein the shrimp, and rinse the scallops.

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 2

    Boil the Spaghetti

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes. Reserve 1 cup of pasta water, then drain the spaghetti and set aside.

Making the Sauce

  1. 3

    Sauté the Aromatics

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes, and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.

  2. 4

    Add the Tomatoes

Pour in the canned diced tomatoes, and season with salt and black pepper. Stir to combine, and let the sauce simmer for about 10 minutes to thicken slightly.

Cooking the Seafood

  1. 5

    Combine Seafood with Sauce

Add the clams and mussels to the skillet, cover, and cook for about 5 minutes until they open. Add the shrimp and scallops, and cook for an additional 3-5 minutes until the shrimp are pink and the scallops are opaque.

Finishing the Dish

  1. 6

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the cooked spaghetti to the skillet, tossing gently to coat the pasta with the sauce and seafood. If the mixture is too dry, add reserved pasta water a little at a time until desired consistency is reached.

  2. 7

    Garnish and Serve

Remove from heat and stir in fresh basil and parsley. Serve immediately, garnished with additional herbs if desired.
