Cocktail
If barrel-aging (optional)
If you plan to barrel-age the cocktail to add toasted oak character, prepare a small, clean oak barrel (mini 1-2 L) or an oak spiral/stick. Combine the bourbon, amaro, aperitif, and lemon juice in a clean mixing container. Transfer the mixture to the barrel and age for 3–7 days, tasting daily until you reach a balance of oak, spirit, and bittersweet notes. If using an oak spiral/stick, steep for 24–72 hours and taste frequently. Once desired level is reached, filter the aged cocktail through a fine mesh or coffee filter into a clean bottle and refrigerate. Note: barrel aging will mellow bright lemon; you may need to add a small splash (0.1–0.25 oz) of fresh lemon juice when serving to brighten the drink.
If not barrel-aging, proceed to build individual servings immediately.
Shake
Add bourbon (2 oz), amaro (0.75 oz), aperitif (0.75 oz), and fresh lemon juice (0.75 oz) into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. If you used a pre-aged bottled mix, use 3.5 oz (total) of the aged mixture and add 0.2–0.25 oz fresh lemon if needed to brighten.
Shake vigorously
Shake hard for 12–15 seconds until the shaker is very cold and frosty. This chills, dilutes and integrates the citrus with the spirits.
Strain
Double-strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass using a hawthorne and fine mesh strainer to remove ice shards and any pulp.
Serve
Serve immediately. The cocktail yields a balanced bitter-sweet profile with bourbon warmth, amaro complexity, aperitif brightness, and a clean lemon lift.
