Method
Coffee Base
Measure and grind
Measure 0.06 cups (approximately 10–12 grams) of whole coffee beans per 8 oz cup. Grind to the appropriate consistency for your brewing method: medium-coarse for pour-over, medium for drip, coarse for French press, or fine for espresso.
Heat water
Bring fresh water to a boil, then let it sit 30–45 seconds so it cools into the 195–205°F (90–96°C) range. For an 8 oz cup use 8 oz of water.
Rinse filter (if applicable)
If using a paper filter in a pour-over or drip, place the filter and pour a small amount of hot water through it to remove paper taste and preheat the device. Discard rinse water.
Bloom (for pour-over or drip)
Place the ground coffee in your brewer. Pour just enough hot water to saturate the grounds (about twice the weight of the grounds—roughly 20–25 g water for 10–12 g coffee) and let bloom for 30–45 seconds. This releases trapped gases and improves extraction.
Complete extraction
Continue pouring the remaining hot water in a steady, controlled stream (for pour-over) or start the machine (drip) or pour and steep (French press). For French press, steep 4 minutes then plunge slowly. Aim for a total brew time of: pour-over 2.5–3.5 minutes, drip per device timing, French press 4 minutes. Ensure all water passes through grounds.
Serve
Transfer the brewed coffee to a prewarmed cup. If using a French press, pour immediately to avoid over-extraction.
Optional Add-ins
Sweeten
Add up to 1 tsp granulated sugar (adjust to taste) to the hot brewed coffee and stir until dissolved.
Milk or alternative
Steam or heat 2 oz milk or alternative until warm and slightly frothy. Pour into the brewed coffee to make a cafe-au-lait style drink or add to taste.
Flavoring
Stir in 1/4 tsp vanilla extract or 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon (or both) to taste for additional aroma and flavor.
Cleanup
Discard used grounds and rinse equipment. Wipe kettle and tamp down any residual grounds. Clean grinder burrs as needed.
