Method

Base dough

1

Preheat and prepare

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.

2

Combine dry ingredients

In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt until evenly distributed. Set aside.

3

Cream butter and sugars

In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened unsalted butter with the granulated sugar and packed brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes using an electric mixer on medium speed. Scrape down the bowl as needed.

4

Add egg and vanilla

Add the large egg and vanilla extract to the butter-sugar mixture and beat until combined, about 30 seconds. Make sure the egg is fully incorporated and the batter looks smooth.

5

Incorporate dry ingredients

With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and mix just until no streaks of flour remain. Do not overmix; stop as soon as the dough comes together.

Chocolate chips

6

Fold in chips

Add the semi-sweet chocolate chips to the dough. Fold them in gently with a spatula until evenly distributed throughout the dough, leaving some visible chips for appearance.

7

Portion cookies

Using a 1.5 tablespoon cookie scoop or two spoons, portion dough into rounded mounds about 1 to 1 1/4 tablespoons each and place them 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. Slightly flatten each mound with the palm of your hand or the back of a spoon for even baking.

8

Optional sprinkle

If using, sprinkle a small pinch of sea salt flakes on top of each cookie dough mound to enhance flavor.

9

Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 9–11 minutes, or until the edges are set and lightly golden but the centers still look slightly soft. Rotate the baking sheets halfway through baking for even color.

10

Cool

Remove the baking sheets from the oven. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes to set, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
